Move-In Lock Checklist

Doors and gates

Front door deadbolt and handleset rekeyed to one new key. Builder, trades, agents and previous owners may all have a copy.
Garage-entry door (the door from the garage into the house). The one nobody rekeys, and the one every trade used.
Side gate and rear gate keyed locks matched to the house key. Common on Twin Oaks Valley and hillside lots.
Sliding or French patio door latch works; add a secondary lock if it does not.
Smart lock keyed backup rekeyed too. Most keypad deadbolts keep a cylinder that still matches the builder key.

Construction keys confirmed dead after the rekey (try the old key; it should not turn).
Garage door keypad code and opener remotes reset. The old code lives on with anyone who had it.
Smart lock user codes set per person; delete any installer or demo codes.
Count your keys. Two per adult plus one spare in a known place is the usual answer.

Cluster mailbox lock replaced (resident compartment only; USPS owns the carrier lock).
HOA fobs and pool or gate credentials transferred or reissued through management.
CC&Rs checked before changing exterior hardware finish or style.
